How to Protect Your Computer From Hackers

As more of our lives are online, security from hackers becomes increasingly important. Hackers are focused on two things: creating chaos and taking money. Hackers steal your personal information to create unauthorized charges on your accounts or disrupt your business using malware.

The good news is that there are many ways to stop cyberattacks, and the majority of them require no large amount of effort. Start by encrypting data that’s not being transmitted over the internet (such as social security numbers for employees, routing digits of banks and other sensitive information). Enable full-disk encryption that come standard with most operating systems: for PCs, it’s called BitLocker, for Macs, it’s FileVault.

Always update software programs. Make sure you update your software regularly. Many hackers gain access to computers via outdated programs. Updates eliminate these vulnerabilities, making it harder for hackers to penetrate your system and steal information.

Install a firewall on all your devices. Firewalls are network system designed to regulate the flow of and outgoing data that is stored on your computer. Windows and macOS include a firewall built-in however, it is recommended to use a third-party application to secure mobile devices and home networks.

Review your network and device names. Avoid using personal identifiers such as your last name or number. This could allow hackers access to your personal information.

Be cautious when discussing your work with others. Even the smallest details, like the place where you grew up, or the names of your pets, can be used to help hackers breach security systems.
